Target Audience: This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of Physicians, Neonatologists, Pediatricians, GPs, IBCLCs, Nurse practitioners, Registered Nurses, Midwives, Registered dietitians, CLCs, Peer supporters, Doulas, and Childbirth educators.
- Recognise the influence of socio-economic, cultural and historical barriers affecting breastfeeding families globally and locally.
- Discuss maternal and infant-related breastfeeding challenges and the role the lactation consultant’s specialised counselling skills play in assisting families to overcome these.
- Outline current research into both how breastfeeding can influence maternal and infant health, and how certain health conditions can affect breastfeeding.
- Identify the impact of mental health, provider-client relationship and healthcare systems on the breastfeeding experience.
- Describe the importance of the WHO Code in protecting breastfeeding and the ongoing challenges involved in ensuring its implementation worldwide.
