Lack of breastfeeding support during the critical first weeks negatively affects the overall breastfeeding intentions and prevalence.

Unregulated donation of breastmilk substitutes combined with a lack of access to clean and safe water during emergencies place infants and young children at higher risk of malnutrition and mortality.

Breastfeeding can acts as an equaliser in our society and efforts must be made to ensure everyone especially the vulnerable group has access to breastfeeding support and opportunities.

Investments in breastfeeding to address these inequalities is vital and can alleviate the social inequalities.

Protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding addresses inequalities that stand in the way of sustainable development.

Elizabeth Yip, RN, RM, IBCLC

Elizabeth Yip has worked in Midwifery since 1981. She has worked across all midwifery areas including NICU. She continued part time work in midwifery while caring for her children and did some Child and Family Health nursing. She has had a lifelong passion to support lactation which started during her childhood from listening to her mother, her family, and her mother’s friends’ stories They talked about the joys and difficulties they encountered. Her passion to continue listening to women’s stories and her career has helped her learn and see what does and does not work for women and their babies. She has been a lifelong believer in women-/person-centered care and often wondered why we continue to do things that are not working for us and those we care for.

Spilt Milk Stories. What we can learn from women’s own honest breastfeeding stories to improve future care.

A collection of over 80 heartfelt, intimate, and at times difficult stories of breastfeeding experiences from women and their partners was collected by Liz that showcase what she wished she had learnt early in her career; that breastfeeding is about more than how breasts work. It is about the women, her breasts, her baby and the support she gets.
