Empowering breastfeeding: science and support

Target Audience: This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of Physicians, Neonatologists, Pediatricians, GPs, IBCLCs, Nurse practitioners, Registered Nurses, Midwives, Registered dietitians, CLCs, Peer supporters, Doulas, and Childbirth educators.

Conference Objectives: At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss impacts of and solutions to potential barriers of access to appropriate breastfeeding information and support for families including social, situational and cultural determinants.
  2. Outline the importance of positioning and attachment techniques for optimising breastfeeding success, including in the presence of oral restrictions, with appropriate management if indicated.
  3. Ethics and breastfeeding: recognise the pervasive influence of marketing and the importance of the Code in protecting families’ access to appropriate support.
  4. Describe therapeutic aspects of breastfeeding for families including through the process of weaning and induced lactation.
  5. Identify strategies to support breastfeeding for families experiencing particular challenges of infant illness and/or weight loss; and of maternal postpartum psychosis.

Accreditation and Designation:
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Interstate Postgraduate Medical Association and iLactation. The IPMA is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Interstate Postgraduate Medical Association designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 20.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
